What to Expect

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics of wheel throwing with guidance from experienced local potter John Vela. No prior pottery experience is needed—this class is designed specifically for beginners and first-timers.

You and your partner will each create your own piece of pottery on the wheel. Some couples choose to make matching mugs, while others surprise each other with a handmade gift. The focus is on having fun, experimenting with clay, and enjoying the experience together.

To make the evening extra sweet, we’ll be serving chocolate-covered strawberries, and the class is BYOB, so feel free to bring your favorite drinks to sip while you spin.

John Vela is an Austin-based ceramic artist with over 25 years of experience in production pottery and more than 15 years of teaching experience. Known for his friendly, encouraging teaching style, John makes wheel throwing approachable and enjoyable for everyone—especially those trying it for the first time.
