2013 Guest Artist Workshop: Carl Block
4 Artists, 4 Workshops, 4 Days
The 2013 Texas Clay Continuum will be hosted at the Eye of the Dog Art Center* in San Marcos, January 10th – 13th. Rotate through four exciting hands-on workshops in four days. Explore juxtaposition and scale in figurative sculpture with Billy Ray Mangham. Color with fire plus alternative glaze and surface techniques with Randy Brodnax. Create “Spirit Jugs” and folk art with Carl Block. Design and construct teapots both fun and functional with Bridget Hauser. There is something to excite everyone and always something new to learn! Clay, creativity, and community are a wonderful way to begin the new year.
2013 Guest Artist Carl Block: Spirit Jugs Understand, create and breathe the ancient spirit into art via “Face Jugs”. Working from the “tap root”, students will learn how combining the intuitive with the trained eye will help create a spiritual work of art. Techniques in creative brainstorming and learning visualization will be explored and taught. Every student will leave the class with their own hand-sculpted “Face Jug”, and a new found ability to plug into the spirit of their art.

Bridget Hauser: Tea Time This year we will explore teapots. First, throwing and constructing a traditional teapot with an overhead handle. Students will learn what “functional” means for a
teapot and then progress into fun with a second teapot. Students will leave with two of their own greenware teapots to inspire new works.
Randy Brodnax: Color with Fire Be amazed by the firing of alternative kilns and surface techniques. Randy will share his expertise in alternative approaches to fire, surface, life and food. He will add to his treasure trove of tricks this year, the teaching of stannous chloride in fuming. A pearl essence is achieved, a traditional raku glaze effect. This is your time to play with color and fire!

Billy Ray Mangham: Figurative Sculpture Tell a complete story in one sculpture using such concepts as juxtaposition and scale. Billy Ray will teach basic hand-building techniques for torsos, heads, and other body parts as well as bananas, trucks, etc. Factual or fantasy, real or imagined, come with a story in your head or invent one as you go.
